Google Page Rank, Website Traffic, Reciprocal Links, Ugh The Insanity Of Them All!
There are a million ways to Sunday to advertise and market your website to the world. With options from text ads to banner ads, to online radio spots and now online video spots, your choices to advertise your website and increase traffic really is limited only by your imagination.
However, the ultimate form of generating quality traffic to your website does not cost you a dime and that is getting in one of the top 5 positions on any and every search engine. Statistics show the higher you rank in a search the more likely someone will click the link that will direct them to your website and hopefully make a purchase.
Google is the gold standard of search engines. You type in a couple of words and in less than a second you have millions of results. So how do they do it? About once a quarter they crawl the internet looking at pretty much every web site available that is older than 6 months (although rumors said your site can be a bit newer). Then based on Google’s top secret algorithm they determine how popular site is and assign it a number from zero to ten, better known as the Google Page Rank. The more popular your site the higher your rank, the more likely you will appear closer to the top. Sounds easy right? So how do you become more popular? Isn’t this just like the ‘chicken before the egg’ theory?
There are a couple of ways to increase your website’s popularity that contribute to increasing your Google Page Rank. The two most popular are creating reciprocal links and one way links.
Reciprocal links are links in which another website puts a link on their site pointing to yours and you in turn do the same for them. Google looks favorably upon websites linking to other websites, and if you have site’s that have a higher Google Page Rank than yours Google weighs that even heavier. To obtain reciprocal links you can contact websites that are similar in content to yours and ask them to exchange links with you or you can sign up with a link exchange service where website owners exchange links. Either way will work and it all depends on what you feel comfortable with.
The second way is creating one way links. Google weighs one way links heavier than reciprocal links for the mere fact that a website is pointing to you but you are not pointing back to it. Getting one way links is vastly different than obtaining reciprocal links. You could contact a website and ask the to put a link to your site, but if you do not do it for them, chances are they will tell you to get lost.
The two best methods for obtaining one way links are participating in online message boards related to the content of your site and article marketing. To create one way links with the message board method you simply engage in some discussions and make sure you put a link in your signature that points to your website. Everytime you create a new topic or post to an existing one your link appears.
To create one way links via article marketing, you simply write a helpful article that is related to the content of your website, post it to various article directories and in the resource box that they allow you to have, put a link back to your website. Some article directories receive tens of thousands of hits daily and Google likes that. Therefore the link in your resource box will be looked upon favorably by Google.
Hopefully this helped cleared up most of the confusion when it comes to all this Internet terminology that surrounds running a website. There are plenty of ideas in this article to get you started and keep you busy. If you do it right, your Google Page Rank should increase in no time.
